What to do if you put the wrong fuel in your vehicle

Firstly, if you put the wrong fuel in your vehicle, don’t panic! Just follow these few steps and you will be fine!

  • Don’t Start the Vehicle

Clients who start the engine will draw up contaminated fuel in to your vehicles fuel system. This is bad as as you can seriously damage your fuel system and your engine. If you have put petrol in a diesel engine, you run the risk of washing all the lubrication out of the high pressure pump.

Remember that Diesel fuel is not just a fuel, but a source of lubrication for your fuel system. When clients run petrol through the fuel system they are washing all the lubrication away as petrol is a solvent.

This will cause metal on metal friction and may cause metal swarf to enter the diesel injection system, blocking the injectors and rendering them unserviceable.

  • Don’t Turn on The Ignition

Clients who turn on the ignition but not start the vehicle, can still drag contaminated fuel from the fuel tank to the fuel system. Most common rail diesel engines use a primer pump at the rear of the vehicle to prime the high pressure pump for starting the vehicle. In addition, if your vehicle’s battery condition is poor, we might not be able to get you started once you have been drained. As we are not allowed to “jump start” vehicles on petrol forecourts.

  •  Notify the Fuel Station Staff

The fuel station staff may need to cone of the area where your vehicle is. This will let the other customers know that the pump you are currently at is now out of service. Although this is a little embarrassing it saves people pulling up behind you and staring at you waiting for you to move your vehicle.
